The following recording was recovered from a body-worn camera. It contains graphic violence, gore and disturbing scenes.
Best with headphones · landscape on phonesTouch: left side is a floating stick (push to the edge to run), drag anywhere on the right to look, the fire button also aims while you drag it. Gamepads work too: sticks, RT fire, LT aim, X reload, B shove, A use, Y switch, RB light.
DEAD AIR is a short horror shooter presented as recovered body-worn camera footage. Everything in it runs live in your browser: the city block, the rain, the people, the sound.
Every body is sculpted at load time from signed-distance anatomy, meshed with surface nets and skinned automatically. Deaths and corpses are simulated with a verlet ragdoll. All sounds, including gunshots, rain and zombie voices, are synthesised with Web Audio. The camera look (fisheye lens, chromatic aberration, auto exposure, sensor noise, compression and lens water) is a custom post-processing chain.
Surface textures, props and HDR environments: Poly Haven (polyhaven.com), CC0. Rendering: three.js (MIT). Type: Big Shoulders Display and IBM Plex (SIL Open Font License).
All names, units, places and devices are fictional.
The camera kept recording after the officer went down.
Officer Ray Halloran, 21-Adam-14, was shot by responding SWAT officers at 03:38 after showing symptoms of what would later be called Keston fever. He was the first law enforcement death of the outbreak. Within seventy-two hours the east district was sealed. This recording was never released.
